Accessories

Sometimes it's all in the accessories. From a belt to a scarf to jewellery, nothing quite pulls an outfit together. The beauty of the humble accessory is that can update an ensemble, the perfect investment from season to season.

First and foremost we have belts. I love nothing more than trawling vintage and second hand shops for cheap belts.

Some other fun was to accessorise...

So next time you look at your wardrobe in despair searching for something to wear, look no further than some simple accessories.

Gold Tips

Everywhere I look, shoes of all varieties have had a bit sprinkling of gold. From tips to heels to all over metallica, the shoe of the season comes with a hint of sparkle. I love shoes - they always fit - and one can never have too many. I bought into this trend this past winter with a pair of Topshop, gold heeled ankle boots, which I have worn to death. The perfect combination of sophistication and cool these boots can be dressed up or down - this versatility making them all the more attractive (meaning their cost per wear went way down).

Verameat

I am always looking for new brands, especially jewellery ones. I stumbled across Verameat a while ago and instantly fell in love with their unique pieces. The designer, Vera Balyura, was born in Ukraine and uses her upbringing and travels as inspiration for her work.

Below are some of my favourite pieces...

I always find that jewellery can become a bit boring which is why I love Verameat's quirky designs. I particularly love the vampire fang necklace.

Visit the Verameat website to browse the rest.

Neon Flash

Trend of the moment.....a hint of neon. I wear a lot of black and although I am an admirer of the print craze, I mean a real admirer, I still always seem to revert to black. Which is why maybe this trend is a gentle way for me to introduce some colour to my wardrobe.

Sunshine!

The thing I love about living in England is that although the weather is pretty much shite all year round, we have these beautiful days of sunshine and everyone get's really excited and goes and sits in the park with their sunglasses on drinking pimms and cider. It's because these days are so rare that when they finally roll around England gets together and celebrates.
So although I would love to live somewhere where the sun made a more regular appearance, nothing quite beats that feeling.

The Kooples

Not only do I love this brand for their clothes, but I am an admirer of their, in my opinion, successful marketing campaign - the Koople couples. Their ads feature real-life couples, dressed head to toe in the Kooples of course, and look pretty damn cool. The brand was founded by 3 french brothers who collaborated with Saville Row, home to the most famous tailors. This collaboration of french sophistication and london cool is what makes this brand a favourite of mine. I could spend hours on their website or on their YouTube page watch clips of the couples.

Here are the couples from their latest campaign...

I love the videos that accompany their couples...

Check out their website and YouTube page.

Cannes Film Festival 2012

It's that time of year again when film-makers and actors alike flock to the south of France to celebrate the very best in new movies. Here is what I'm looking forward to seeing...

Laurence Anyways
I am very excited to see this movie from the incredibly young French-Canadian Xavier Dolan. The movie follows 30 year old Laurence who on his birthday tells his girlfriend Fred that he wants to become a woman. Although the reviews have been mixed, I am still looking forward to seeing this when it eventually arrives in cinemas - the trailer is heartbreakingly beautiful.

Moonrise Kingdom
This movie has a pretty impressive cast from Bruce Willis and Bill Murray to Tilda Swinton and Edward Norton, though the story centres around a young boy and girl who run away together. Set during the 60s, the scenic design is particularly great.

On the Road
I can't wait to see this adaptation Jack Kerouac's novel about two poets who set off across the country in search of themselves. Although Kristin Stewart has done a fair few other films (other than Twilight) I am looking forward to seeing her in something a little different as she attempts to make a name for herself outside the Twilight franchise. This movie has been a long time coming and is now finally happening, and it sure does look good.

Rust and Bone
I am a huge fan of Marion Cotillard and thoroughly look forward to seeing her new movie about the relationship between a homeless man (Matthias Schoenaerts ) and a marine worker (Cotillard)who loses her legs in a tragic accident.

There are many other films premiering in Cannes this year, but there are the ones I am for the most part anticipating.

Helmut Newton

Helmut Newton is most remembered for his Le Smoking image of a model in a man's suit - highly controversial at the time. The photograph represented a departure from the views on women that were held of the time. Although feminism has done leaps and bounds in order to give women equal rights, there continues to be a prevalent, significant disparity between men and women - a battle which as of yet has no real end in sight. As a previous post of mine on suits has shown, I have particular love of this idea of power and masculinity, if not for stylish purposes maybe just because we can!
But anyway, back to Helmut Newton. In fashion he is most notably known for his use of polaroid. A dying form of photography, largely due to Polaroid's withdrawal from the market in 2008, as a consequence of the growth of emerging digital technologies, results are incredibly different. The ability to immediately see the picture was the main attraction to Newton.

His photographs are strong and bold which caused a substantial amount of controversy at the time. Although some of his images portray women in a position of power, branded 'porno chic', Newton faced a lot of negative attention from radical feminists. I guess it's a fair argument that nudes are objectifying, the way in which Newton photographed women was completely different, showing their strength and complete control of their sexuality. To me his images are striking and daring, pushing the boundaries by featuring nude women and violence.
