Freedom Tunnels + 5Pointz

So following my post on Graffiti Wars (check it out here) last weekend was filled with outings to both the Freedom Tunnel and 5Pointz

The Freedom Tunnel is what the Amtrak runs through under Riverside Park. The name, however, comes from the graffiti artist Chris 'Freedom' Pape who used the tunnel to showcase some of his most famous work. Before the Amtrak took over the tunnel was home to some 100 homeless people, which is another reason for the name, as the tunnel provided 'free' space.

The tunnel now draws graffiti artists and explorers, which we were last week as we made the trek uptown to 125th street. Wherever there is a flash of light provided from the grates in Riverside Park, the walls are filled with artwork from both notable and amateur artists. It's a pretty cool experience and was surprisingly easy to get to.

The next day we kept the graffiti theme going and visited 5Pointz in Long Island City. The name represents the five boroughs of New York City, all coming together as one. Again, another amazing showcase of work, however, it's almost like a museum, filled with hordes of tourists. It didn't feel authentic at all, especially as the artists have to 'audition'. That being said there is a lot of cool work from a lot of famous artists from all over the world.

New Apartment

Last Sunday a couple of friends and I went to drop off our first piece of furniture in our new apartment. Just a quick side note, getting to Brooklyn, on a Sunday, is not fun. Doing so while carrying a chair, even less fun. Having said that, the wine on our new rooftop while watching the sun go down over Manhattan made it all worth it. While I may be in the West Village for another few weeks, I'm ready for the change that Brooklyn will bring. More than that I'm just excited for the summer to start and for many more gatherings (themed I must add) on our roof.

Here are some snaps me and my fabulous friend Diane took (check out her Tumblr)...

The Great Gatsby

Will this movie just come out already?? I am such a fan of Baz Luhrmann and the cinematic beauty he devises, bringing movies alive with glamour and out of this world fantasy. Both Moulin Rouge and Romeo+Juliet have inspired numerous photo shoots and Luhrmann's latest offering, The Great Gatsby, is no exception. Carey Mulligan graces the cover of US Vogue this month and stars in a spread, shot by Mario Testino, styled by Grace Coddington, wearing clothes from Chanel Haute Couture, Miu Miu, Oscar de la Renta, Nina Ricci, and Alexander McQueen. The result is somewhat magical...

Not only does the film look visually stunning but a score by Jay Z? Let's hope it can live up to all the hype when it finally reaches cinemas on May 10th.

Little Boy, Big Dog

Could I BE any more in love with these photos? They provided yet another distraction from the revision I should be doing right now. Mum Stasha Becker simply started to take photos of her son (Little J) and her dog (Big M), which has become an Instagram sensation.
